So You Think You Can Dance thoughts - since I don’t have my favorite person to watch this with anymore!
opening number - loved this. loved the costumes. loved the music. was not surprised to find out it was a chris scott routine.
witney & chehon - she danced the hell out of this. i almost think its a shame she got something she’s so comfortable with so quickly. but im fairly sure she has nothing to worry about this week. it definitely felt like the judges cut him some slack. they could have very seriously critiqued him and it felt like they didn’t because they didn’t want to lose him so quickly. Fine with me because I certainly want to see more
tiffany & george - I never thought I would call a Sonya routine forgettable, but I really didn’t think this was that amazing. I was kind of surprised by how much the judges praised it. Maybe it’s one of those routines that’s more amazing in person. Also - her outfit was a bit on the crazy side.
janaya & brandon - i love me some nappy tabs, but this was a bit lackluster. also i feel like during other seasons they would have ripped into her more for how soft her hip hop moves were. i voted for brandon because i want to see more from him, but i have a feeling these two are gonna be bottom 3.
alexa & daniel - i keep trying to like alexa. i do. i disliked ryan so much last season and her resemblance is throwing me off. but i also felt like she got so many breaks during auditions where they kept giving her more chances and i didn’t understand why. and.. this routine didn’t sell me. he was really good but they just didn’t quite connect. i will say that the moments where she was dancing in the structure enclosed i felt a stronger connection both to her and between them. also - wtf red hot pants. just. no.
amber & nick - i like him and wanted to like this more, but it felt very ho-hum. and there was something strange about his facial expressions - even the happy ones not just the grimaces nigel mentioned. probably bottom 3 for these two as well, but hopefully they make it through for at least one more week.
will & amelia - okay i love will and i hate amelia. this doesn’t bode well. maybe hate is too strong. i strongly dislike her. no wait, just watched her 9 seconds. back to hate. from the description - this is a reboot of paula abdul’s opposite’s attract video, y/y? i think the costumers didn’t get the memo that her cat was “sophisticated”. this definitely wasn’t my favorite number but the twist lift thing near the end was badass.

janelle & Dareian - he left home to join the circus & can talk like donald duck. new favorite! wow sean cheesman seems to hate the dancers. she was one of my early favorites and man they made that look effortless and it clearly was anything but. plus they looked like they were having a ton of fun.
eliana & cyrus-ooo this looks like a fun pairing! oh crap its a tyce routine. those are usually the kiss of death. actually that was enjoyable! so much personality! and they both looked comfortable with it. im shocked! i dont think i would watch it over and over like mary suggested, but id definitely at least watch it again which is more than i can say for others
audrey & matt - these two haven’t been very memorable for me but maybe they’ll be better as a pairing for me. WOO travis wall! Booo titanic. meh i wanted to like that more. they danced the hell out of it and it truly showed off what fantastic dancers they are. but there was something about it i didn’t like. maybe it was the music. but bravo to them on those lifts and that jump. i can’t wait to see them dance again together.
lindsay & cole - man this seems like a weird pairing. but im guessing anyone they paired with cole would have seemed weird. he’s so unique. hell yes paso doble. cole + paso doble sounds fun! holy crap that was amazing. im gonna watch that again immediately… yeah okay. that was definitely my favorite of the night.
i fail at voting. i totally just voted for everyone but like 4 people. side rant - i hate that i can’t vote on my vote because i have an east coast number but am watching on the west coast. yes i can vote online (and i did) but it requires facebook
also - im still confused about this once a week thing. im guessing eliminations are happening after everyone dances? because otherwise how would people know who they are paired with for that week?? also does this mean no more solos?
all in all a pretty decent start! this should be a fun season for sure :)
